Sunday Morning

BY: Danny Boggs

It’s 7:30 Sunday morning. It’s time to get out of bed and on your feet. There are people we have to meet. It’s off to the church’s building but not just to occupy a seat or even to go out and eat. We go to do the things that makes our life complete and to humble ourselves down at God’s feet. So, It’s out of bed and on your feet.

Too many times in today’s world men are not taking the leadership in their homes. I believe that it is a man’s responsible to get his family to church. It’s the father, not the mother or the children, who must shoulder the primary responsibility. Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy Father and Mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.  And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:1-4).

I have talked to some women and asked them “Where is your husband?” They say, “I can’t get him out of bed.”  Well, the fact is, she shouldn’t have to. I have heard men say “Well my kids go to church all the time.” These fathers would do well to learn to take responsibility and be examples for their children by heeding the Scripture. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.  Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.  Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.  Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.  Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.  Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God.  And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the rewards of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.  But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons (Colossians 3:17-25).

SO, MEN GET OUT OF BED AND ON YOUR FEET AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY!

There is something special about new things. A new car has that distinct ‘smell’. A new baby is so cute. Newly weds are so happy. New jobs are exciting and hold promise for the future. Yes, new things are very special.

The Bible speaks concerning new things that God has given to man. One such item was the giving of the New Covenant. The Hebrew writer affirmed that the old covenant was replaced with the new covenant (Hebrews 8:13). Jesus is the Mediator of the new covenant and that is dedicated by His blood and speaks better things than the old covenant (Hebrews 12:24). The new is definitely better.

The scriptures speak of the Christian in this manner. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). In writing to the Colossians, Paul speaks of putting off the old man with its deeds and having put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him (Colossians 3:10).

The Christian has put behind him the past life. He has taken God at His word when He said, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more” (Hebrews 10:17). This means that the Christian has a new beginning. He is able to start over. He has a clean slate. He can now go forth into the world and live a righteous life without the baggage of past sins weighing him down. He has a new life; a new beginning.

New beginnings are a wonderful thing. They give us an opportunity to do those things we should have done, and they give us the opportunity to make restitution for our mistakes where possible.

Every three hundred sixty five days or there about, we are given the opportunity for a new beginning. It is called a New Year. There is a lot of celebrating and joyous revelry by many people. We are made to wonder if any of these party goers are thinking of new beginnings. More than likely, they are celebrating their own existence at the close of another year.

New things are wonderful things. The new year is a wonderful time to chart the course for the rest of our life. There is no better compass to use than that of Jesus Christ. Those who are not Christians can become new creatures by obeying the gospel [see back page].

As the church at Pound, we can use this year to chart a course of work in the Master’s kingdom. We can be busy working by keeping our eyes on the compass of our soul.

WHO DO YOU ASK?

BY: Glen Young

The Indians asked their Chief in autumn if the winter was going to be cold.

Not really knowing an answer, the chief replied that the winter was going to be cold and that the members of the village were to collect wood to be prepared.

Being a good and wise leader, he then went to the nearest phone booth and called the National Weather Service and asked, “Is this winter to be cold?”

The man on the telephone responded, “This winter is going to be quite cold indeed.”

So the Chief went back to speed up his people and encourage them to collect even more wood. A week later he called the National Weather Service again, “Is it going to be a very cold winter?”

“Yes,” the man replied, “it’s going to be a very cold winter.” So the Chief went back to his people and ordered them to go and find every scrap of wood they could find.

Two weeks later he called the National Weather Service again “Are you absolutely sure that the winter is going to be very cold?”

“Absolutely,” the man replies, “the Indians are collecting wood like crazy!”

When it comes to religious questions, where do you get your answers? Do you find them in a catechism, a manual, a confession of faith, a discipline, the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, the Book of Mormon, or some other such psuedo-authoritative writing? If you answer in the positive, do you know if the information you are receiving is correct?

Multitudes of well meaning people in search of salvation inquire at the table of organized religion. The fare from this table is as diverse as the number of organizations represented. As one begins his feast, each morsel entices with its proclamation of authority. The sweet dainties of human religion will not fool the wise man. He will continue his search for the Book, that when eaten, is sweet to the mouth but bitter to the belly (Revelation 10:9-10).

Because Paul and Silas’ preaching created an uproar in Thessalonica, the brethren sent them to Berea by night. In Berea, they continued their preaching which prompted Luke to write, “Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of the mind, examining the Scriptures daily, whether these things were so” (Acts 17:11).

The noble Bereans went to the right source to find salvation. They come down to us over a period of two thousand years as the proper example of those who love the truth.

Though we love our parents, our families, a particular church, or a particular preacher, we dare not rely upon their words to save. Though we have confidence in particular church officials or learned men, we must reject their teaching when it contradicts the Holy Scriptures.

Many are franticly gathering wood, spiritually speaking (Matthew 7:20-28). However, because they gather without the authority of the Lord with them, they gather in vain. Don’t let this happen to you. Go to the right source.

The Last Word

We were appalled to hear that a judge in Vermont gave a confessed child molester sixty days for sexually abusing a six year old girl for four years of her young life. When did the sexual abuse start, you can do the math. Can you say two?

The judge rationalized that the monster needed the kind of help he could not get if he were in prison. Those who have taken umbrage at this lunatic sentence have rightfully argued that the sentence does not fit the crime. A little girl’s life is ruined. She is emotional scared which will in turn cause her a life of misery. Personally, I don’t think sitting in a jail cell with color TV and plenty of food for the rest of his life is punishment enough for this crime.

There are many who agree that those who inflict misery upon the innocent should be shown no mercy. Yet, when it comes to eternal damnation, they recoil in horror to think that God would punish souls in an eternal fire. Does a HELL fire that is never quenched qualify as punishment that fits the crime for those who reject Christ? YES!

You may not be a murder, fornicator, child molester, homosexual, thief, and such like; but you are a sinner (Romans 3:23). As a sinner, you are guilty of torturing and brutally killing an innocent.

In speaking of Jesus, Peter says, “who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins , might live for righteousness — by whose stripes you were healed” (1 Peter 2:24). Every stripe, every abusive word, every pain, suffered by Jesus was inflicted by our hands and uttered by our tongues (Acts 2:36).

A liberal judge in Vermont will let a child molester off easy. A liberal scholar will deny the existence of HELL. If one is outraged by the first, why not the second?
